Description
Kokora Extra Strength Black Elderberry Syrup is a concentrated botanical formula designed to support healthy immune function and seasonal wellness.* Each teaspoon provides 2.75 g of organic European black elderberry fruit juice concentrate, equivalent to approximately 21 g of fresh black elderberries according to Kokora. The elderberries are harvested in Austria, frozen after harvest, and processed into a concentrated juice.
The formula combines black elderberry with aronia berry concentrate, another naturally polyphenol-rich fruit traditionally valued for its antioxidant content. Buckwheat honey provides natural sweetness, while organic lemon juice concentrate and monk fruit round out the flavor without the use of cane sugar or glucose syrup.
Key formula features:
- Organic Black Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) – 2.75 g per teaspoon: Concentrated fruit juice providing naturally occurring anthocyanins and other plant polyphenols.
- Aronia Berry (Aronia melanocarpa) – 1.65 g: Adds another concentrated source of naturally occurring antioxidant compounds.
- Buckwheat Honey – 1.97 g: Provides natural sweetness and complements the berry concentrates.
- Organic Lemon Juice Concentrate – 166 mg: Adds acidity and balances the flavor profile.
- No cane sugar or glucose syrup is listed in the formula.
Kokora positions this product for seasonal immune support and everyday wellness, making it an easy-to-use liquid option for both adults and children ages four and older.*
Clinical Research Highlights
Published research exists on Sambucus nigra preparations generally, but I did not find a peer-reviewed clinical trial specifically evaluating Kokora Extra Strength Black Elderberry Syrup.
A 2021 systematic review evaluating five randomized clinical trials found that elderberry preparations have been studied for seasonal respiratory wellness, but the authors characterized the overall evidence regarding benefits and harms as uncertain and called for additional well-designed research.
A broader 2022 scientific review describes elderberry as a source of polyphenolic and other bioactive compounds and notes antioxidant activity in experimental research, while also emphasizing that human clinical evidence remains limited.
